I've heard from several sources (including this post at MLB Trade Rumors) that Alex Gonzalez is very close to signing with the Red Sox. Alex was a favourite of mine when he played for Toronto, but while he sported decent defense skills, his offense never really lived up to the hype. Still, I was happy to see him play ever so briefly for the Expos a couple of years ago. Now, Boston appears very close to settling on Alex, and I can't help but wonder if this is a mistake for the BoSox. While he's a full 3 years his senior, wouldn't Royce Clayton be a better signing?

Yes, Clayton would be better. Better fielder, much more consistent batter. He hasn't got the occasional pop of Gonzalez but I think he would be a much better anchor for the infield.
Thanks for backing me up on that one, Rick! It sounds like we have some company too: Tom Verducci of SI.com is giving this potential acquisition a grade of C.
The other Gonzalez
Ooops! It seems I have made my analysis of the Gonzalez to Boston trade rumor a little too quickly. According to All-Baseball.com, the trade is for Alex Gonzalez of the Marlins, not Alex Scott Gonzalez of the Devil Rays. This works out a little better…
Hmmm…I think the Marlins' Gonzalez has had a few years with 20 or so homeruns but he has always struck me as the kind of player who only plays hard when he wants to – which is not all that often. I'd still rather have Clayton.
